What is Safe Activism?
Most of United for Iran’s employees are former activists, protesters, or political prisoners who left the country for their personal safety. They have extensive networks among individuals both inside and outside Iran who have similar experiences.
Safe Activism aims to leverage those networks and experiences to protect those who remain in the country. Through interviews with hundreds of activists and digital security practitioners, Safe Activism compiles a list of tactics that activists in Iran can use to minimize the risk of arrest, navigate the interrogation process, and mitigate the consequences of incarceration. The project’s main product is a 100+ page booklet which lists key best practices for stages before, during, and after arrest, based on the experiences of over 200 previously interrogated, incarcerated, or otherwise pressured Iranian activists.
Iran notoriously incarcerates, tortures, and denies legal due process to countless activists and political prisoners. Outside of the legal system, plain-clothes officers and morality police harass countless Iranians for minor or entirely fabricated infractions every day. Through Safe Activism, Iranians can protect themselves, minimize the risk of their activities, and organize and protest more effectively.
