Despite extreme weather conditions, seven Iranian rights activists – including Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi – staged a sit-in outside the United Nations human rights headquarters in Geneva to urge the release of detained human rights defender, Nasrin Sotoudeh. The Facebook page launched for this protest reports that the sit-in participants include Shirin Ebadi, Mahboubeh Gholizadeh, Mansoureh Shojai, Shadi Sadr, Parvin Ardalan, Khadijeh Moghaddam and Asieh Amini. Shirin Ebadi said to reporters : “Ms. Pillay [the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights] should be aware that a lawyer, a human rights activist in Iran, is at death’s door and she needs to do something,” further adding that “Nasrin Sotoudeh is not the only political prisoner in Iran and a number of other prisoners are also on hunger strike and over 40 journalists and bloggers are incarcerated as well.”
