With the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) meeting through the month of March, this is a prime opportunity for organizers to urge UNHRC members to take concrete steps in holding the IRI accountable by appointing a UN special rapporteur to monitor Iran’s rapidly deteriorating human rights situation. A UN special rapporteur did exist on Iran from 1989 to 2002, but the mandate was not renewed after 2002. Given the alarming deterioration of the situation, a UN mechanism must be immediately re-established to assist the international community in dealing with the deepening crisis. Iran’s rejection of 45 critical recommendations during the country’s March 2010 Universal Periodic Review and its continued refusal to cooperate with the UN special procedures demonstrates that Iranian authorities have no intention of upholding the rights of their citizens and must be held accountable for ongoing abuses in the country. Download and mail postcards to UNHRC members in Geneva urging them to appoint a special monitor during its March 2011 session. Currently, about 30 of the 47-member body are the main campaign targets. The postcards can easily be printed from your home computer, folded in half, stamped, and mailed. If you live in any of the countries listed here, it is especially important to take action and mail postcards to your country’s UN representative in Geneva! The addresses for the missions in Geneva can be found here. The postcard can be downloaded in PDF format below. Donate & U4I will mail a postcard for you! We are currently raising funds to ensure 1,000 postcards are sent to the UN Human Rights Council members in Geneva to highlight Iran’s execution binge and urge the Council to appoint a human rights monitor on Iran. Currently, a little over 700 of the 1,000 postcards can be sent. With a small donation U4I will mail a postcard on your behalf. We recommend a $5 donation in order to offset the costs of printing and mailing, but even $1 ensures that 1 more postcard can be mailed. Click here to donate.
