United for Iran Urges Yahoo! to Improve E-mail Security to Ensure Safety of Human Rights Activists

United for Iran joined twenty-five leading human rights and cyber-security organizations and activists in issuing a letter to Melissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo! last week, calling on the internet company to raise security measures to meet international standards and provide safeguards for people around the world that rely on the company’s e-mail service. Human rights defenders are often the targets of surveillance and censorship and rely on encrypted connections to report on human rights violations. Reports have emerged that activists are frequently shown copies of their personal emails during interrogation sessions. Despite the company’s public commitment to human rights in front of the US Congress, Yahoo! remains the only large-scale web-based email provider that has not yet adopted HTTPS protocol, and uses an antiquated and dangerous approach that requires immediate change.
