Taking the New York Streets: activists make their mark (Gallery – Sept 21, 2010)

Last night (September 21, 2010), members of Where is my vote – NY, United4Iran, and dozens of concerned New York activists met near the United Nations Headquarters to literally mark the first night of actions meant to draw attention to the plight of the Iranian people. Many stopped to wander up and down the plaza reading chalked messages demanding accountability for human & civil rights violations the Iranian people continue to face. Several groups also left their mark at the Iranian mission, the Turkish embassy, and the UN headquarters. Surprisingly, the only real wrench in the night was being shooed off the Turkish embassy grounds (but not until after the ground was chalked with the message “Human Rights 4 Iran”!) As the night wound down, a few officials wandered through the plaza, stopping to read the messages, walking in circles around the pictures, stopping to stare at the stickers plastering the benches before sitting. Many who wandered through stopped to talk, ask questions, and several of them even stayed to participate.
