Background Mr. Shirkoo Moarefi, an Iranian-Kurd in his early 30’s, faces an alarming possibility of execution by the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). His charges are “acting against national security” and “enmity with God.”  Mr. Moarefi is one of over twenty Kurdish prisoners sentenced to death in Iran. He was previously a refugee living in Iraq, but was arrested in October 2008 after returning to Iran.

During his first trial, Mr. Moarefi was sentenced to death for alleged ties to a Kurdish opposition group; however, his mother continues to insist that her son has never taken part in any armed struggle against the IRI and that residents of the village where he was arrested can testify that he was not carrying arms when arrested. Despite his execution sentence being upheld by the Supreme Court and being sent to the Judiciary’s Implementation Unit, neither Mr. Moarefi’s lawyer nor Mr. Moarefi have been served with papers. His lawyer has expressed concern over the risk of an illegal execution, especially because executions have been carried out without informing the prisoner’s lawyer or family. Further information can be found on the International Campaign for Human Rights website. Please send an e-letter to various world leaders and UN officials urging them to take action on Shirkoo Moarefi’s behalf! Directions CLICK HERE to send an e-letter.
