Ms. Magazine, July 24 – The organization United for Iran, a coalition of individuals and human rights groups, has planned a Global Day of Action on July 25 to highlight international support for the people of Iran amid the nation’s continuing political unrest. Rallies featuring speakers, marches and performances will take place in over 80 cities around the world this Saturday, according to United for Iran’s website. “Since the contested elections on June 12th, hundreds of thousands of people have participated in hundreds of demonstrations in at least 40 major cities in 15 countries. However, no globally coordinated event has yet been organized. On July 25 people around the world can support the people of Iran in their struggle for democracy, freedom and basic civil rights,” reads a statement on United for Iran’s website. A spokesman for the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, a member organization of United for Iran, told the Washington Times that the worldwide demonstrations will be live-streamed online to Iranians “in hopes of encouraging them to persist in their rejection” of the disputed election results. Other organizations participating in United for Iran include Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Reporters Without Borders. Several Nobel Peace Laureates have endorsed the coalition, including Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, peace activist Mariead Maguire, and humanitarian aid organizer Jody Williams. Demonstrations are scheduled in many major US cities. Events in Washington, DC will include a protest at the United Nations office, a march and a rally on the National Mall featuring speeches by Jody Williams, human rights lawyer Mehrangiz Kar and others, as well as a performance by Iranian singer Dariush.
