United for Iran (U4I) is a nonprofit based in the San Francisco Bay Area working to advance civil liberties in Iran by advocating for human rights, supporting civil society, and engaging citizens through technology. Two of our longest-running projects are the Iran Prison Atlas (IPA) and IranCubator. IPA is a dynamic database that tracks and publicizes the prosecution and imprisonment of Iran’s political prisoners. IranCubator is a technology incubator that supports the development of secure mobile applications that protect and empower persecuted populations inside Iran. In 2017 and 2018, IranCubator supported the creation of mobile apps that directly empower Iranian citizens to connect, organize, and disseminate critical information. Job Description

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for the day-to-day management and daily organizational support for the Iran Human Rights Barometer project (IHR Barometer). This project is an interactive platform, using Tableau software, that visualizes the broadest set of human rights indicators from Iran. The objective of this project is to improve and increase the publicly available data on human rights violations in Iran in an attempt to prevent and respond to human rights abuses. The Project Coordinator will report directly to the Human Rights Advisor and work closely with the human rights team and Tableau staff. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination, management, and data collection for the Iran Human Rights Barometer project and assist the Executive Director, Human Rights Advisor, and various other teams in the implementation of the project deliverables. This position is a fixed-term position for 2 years, with the opportunity for renewal contingent on funding. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic professional to join a growing organization and redefine the story of human rights and technology in Iran. Candidates in the Bay Area are preferred, with remote candidates considered.

 

 

Job Responsibilities

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for daily operational support on the IHR Barometer project, including, but not limited to:

  • Data collection & engineering
  • Acquiring data from our human rights team and external partners
  • Cleaning, adding, formatting, and “canonicalizing” data into templates for Tableau
  • Identifying missing data and gaps in the data sets
  • Surveying partners and stakeholders to assess the impact of the IHR Barometer project
  • Research
  • Researching human rights issues and updating data sets as needed
  • Relationship-building
  • Managing and nurturing existing relationships with external partners
  • Building relationships with new partners and stakeholders that can benefit from the outputs of the IHR Barometer project
  • Writing & communications
  • Assisting the Communications team on marketing and outreach campaigns
  • Drafting promotional content to be sent out to media outlets and assisting the Communications team in the distribution of these materials
  • Assisting the Human Rights Advisor on submissions to advocacy targets based on the data and outputs of the project
  • Drafting quarterly project reports to funders and assisting the Operations team with other ad hoc reporting
  • Event planning & administration
  • Assisting the Executive Director and Human Rights Advisor in the preparation and coordination of conference panels and webinars
  • Assisting the Human Rights Advisor in coordinating meetings with government officials, EU bodies, and UN bodies
  • Day-to-day management
  • Managing deliverables and deadlines for the IHR Barometer project

Job Qualifications

The ideal Project Coordinator candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent job experience, in data engineering
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and Microsoft Excel
  • A proven track record of successfully managing projects and relationships with partners
  • Impeccable English writing, editing, report and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and well-organized
  • Event planning and coordination skills
  • Knowledge of G-Suite and Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to work independently, ensuring data and metrics are tracked and met
  • A strong commitment to social change and access to technology
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience

Optional Bonus Qualifications

  • Fluent in Persian
  • Knowledge of Tableau and data visualization tools
  • Working knowledge of human rights issues in Iran and a basic understanding of the complexities of Iranian politics and policy, Iran-US, or Iran-EU relations
